Nationalism and Identity Culture and Imagination in a Caribbean Diaspora: Culture and the Imagination in a Caribbean Diaspora
Published in Paperback by Zed Books (April, 1996)
Author: Stefano Harney
Average review score:

Cultural studies in the Caribbean
Using both political and literary texts, this book illuminates postcolonial nationalist thought in Trinidad and Tobago. Applying the British cultural studies tradition, the author adds an ethnographic knowledge that makes for a rich reading. Highly recommended.

Cosmopolitan Trinidad
The value of this book is that readers learn of the incredible cosmopolitan history of this postcolonial nation. They also learn how creative its 1.3 million people have been in the arts, literature, music, and carnival. I recommend this book unreseverdly.

Diasporic Insights
This book is an authoritive look at postcolonial Trinidad from a cultural studies perspective. It blends autonomist, feminist, and poststructuralism impulses to give the reader a rich picture of diasporic Caribbean experience. Highly recommended.

Point out some mistake in the book
First, I am a non-denominational Christian. I am not a Mormon who goes to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Therefore, I am not writing to defend LDS' doctrine. Don't be misled. I am just writing to point out some error in this book.

In "This We Believe" on page 289 in Chapter 11 which titled "The Evangelical Family: Its Blessings and Boundaries", Joseph M. Stowell wrote:

"Sometime ago, a friend was telling me about her Mormon neighbor. She rejoiced in their friendship and said how much she appreciated the times they prayed together. She asked me, "Have you ever prayed with a Mormon?" The inference was that she and her friend were wonderfully one in prayer. While one could cultivate a friendship with Mormons, praying with them would be quite another issue. Because they deny the doctrine that Christ is God, spiritual oneness with them is not only wrong but impossible, according to the Bible. Historically the church has persistently held to the fundamental realities of truth about Christ as a test of faith: his virgin birth, divinity, resurrection, and return."

The phrase "[Mormons] deny the doctrine that Christ is God" is blunt falsehood. LDS affirms that Christ Jesus is God. They might have their Trinity doctrine varied from the one confessed by the mainstream churches but they DO affirm the deity or "Godship" Christ. This is what I'd term "unchristian apology" - affirming the importance of truth on one hand but telling "untruth" on the other (not necessarily lying but by, perhaps, a big careless mistake).

beliefnet review is useful
i think the beliefnet review is very useful. i think there are wide diversity within evangelicalism. somehow the american types and the british type are already not exactly the same. and beyond the evangelical tradition, the Christian Church has even more diversity. to me the bottom line being all of us confessing christians who participate in the life of the church share the same faith.

to be honest, i haven't read through the whole book. but as an editor of the publisher who will publish the book's chinese version, i'll rate it 4-star. and i am looking forward to read kevin vanhoozer's piece on jesus. he is a theologian that has depth.

Every Christian should personally affirm this statement...
In a world that resisits truth and pays the price in growing irrationality, fragmentation, and evil, Jesus says we are to be "salt" and "light"--- radiating centers of Gospel light amidst a world utterly consumed by darkness.

But how well do we understand the Gospel? A group of prominent church leaders and scholars did more than just ask that question. They drafted a clear, definitive statement of the essentials of the Gospel titled "The Gospel of Jesus Christ: An Evangelical Celebration." Leaders from across the denominational landscape have endorsed it, and the list of names, already impressive, continues to grow. This remarkable show of unity affirms the core beliefs about our salvation that evangelicals hold in common. In the face of our differences, these are what bind us together as the church of Jesus Christ and make Gospel the Good News of Great Joy.

___

OUR OPINION:

Every Christian should read and commit themselves wholly to this profound affirmation of the Biblical Gospel. The fact that the reviewer at BeliefNet takes issue with it simply underscores that organization's committment to "the broad way that leads to destruction."

And that is a great tragedy... one that should move us to tears.

And to pray...

Good for New Believers
This study does a great job of working step by step through the scriptures with a lot of references to back the author's points. If you are looking for a study for a group of new believers, this is definately it!! The only reason I didn't give this study 5 stars, was that it wasn't as challenging for long-time believers as others I've done.

The Godson: A True-Life Account of 20 Years Inside the Mob
Published in Paperback by St Martins Mass Market Paper (December, 1994)
Authors: Willie Fopiano, John Harney, and Harney Fopiano
Average review score:

Looking over his shoulder
A woman was recently found dead in her home after publishing tell-all accounts of life inside the mob. One might wonder if Fopiano has been running for cover himself.

This book would make an interesting and complementary addition to a collection including such books as Black Mass by O'Neill and Lehr. It discusses New England organized crime in particular and even touches on inside knowledge of the JFK assassination.

It is an o.k. but more valuable for its local historical flavor, even though some of the organized crime tapestry is not entirely accurate.

Wonderful for individual or group study!
We have used this book as a study guide/course outline in our Sunday School class. It has some excellent questions that really make you think about how you are raising your own child. This would not only be a great book for newlyweds but it would also be a good book for parents that already have children --- It's never too late!

I was so glad it was available for a reference book to keep! Enjoy. You'll learn so much.

Creating Regional Wealth in the Innovation Economy: Models, Perspectives, and Best Practices

OUTDATED!!!
This book may have been useful back when the sock pocket was a big celebrity. In today's marketplace, this book just doesn't add any significant value. I have respect for the authors since I have heard them speak in San Francisco. It's too bad the hype doesn't live up to my expectations. The Internet Economy of the late 90s deserves better.

A so--so book not living up to the hype
When I first bought this book, I could not wait to read it. Unfortunately the book is more hype than anything else. At times I felt like I should spend a day in the library reading articles on microfiche and saved the money I spent.

It is sad since I have heard the authors in Paris many, many times and now I feel like I was cheated. It is a shame.

A global snapshot
For people who want to get an overview of global clusters, what they are, what they can do to a nation's innovation system and its economy, what they have in common and how they differ in these global regions.

It is easy reading and gives a good global perspective. It highlights the local traits and permits comparisons with other geographical clusters, although it does not go as indepth one may hope for further academic research. Given the interview based research style, however, it keeps it lively and is not as "dry" as many other academics books.

The book makes clear that Silicon Valley and Boston's Route 128 are no longer the only innovation clusters.
